Whether itās brunch, a thoughtful gift, or just a quiet afternoon somewhere beautiful, there are some really good options around town right now. Youāll find a few of our favorites below.

š A step toward better Cancer Care in East Tennessee

The Gist: State Representative Gary Hicks recently supported a $7 million funding effort for the University of Tennessee Medical Center to establish a new National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. Currently, Vanderbilt-Ingram in Nashville is the only other such site in the state, despite cancer being the second-leading cause of death in Tennessee. This local center aims to provide advanced research and clinical trials directly to East Tennessee residents.
Why It Matters: Bringing these resources to our region means earlier detection and better support for our neighbors, especially those in rural counties where cancer rates are highest. Itās a vital investment in our communityās health that ensures life-saving care is accessible right in our own backyard.
š A Major Win For East Knoxvilleās Youth

The Gist: On May 1, the Emerald Youth Foundation announced it is purchasing a five-parcel property in the Five Points neighborhood from Eternal Life Harvest Center. This new hub on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue will sit within walking distance of four local schools, including Austin-East and Vine Middle. The project kicks off with a $25 million private investment, bolstered by $9 million in state funding recently approved by Governor Bill Lee.
Why It Matters: After three decades of service, Emerald Youth is finally bringing a dedicated home base to East Knoxville, offering the same academic and athletic support found at their Lonsdale complex. This is one of the most significant private investments the area has seen in decades, proving that our neighborhoodās kids are getting the high-quality facilities they deserve.

š¾ Neighborhood Working Cat: Mr. Knightly
At a compact six pounds, he is an efficient and independent worker who prefers the quiet of a barn over the bustle of a living room. While he is under-socialized and unlikely to become a lap pet, he offers a practical solution for rodent control in exchange for basic shelter and regular meals.
He is a sturdy addition for any local property owner needing a reliable partner for the outbuildings. His adoption fee is waived through the Community Cat Program. He is best suited for outdoor environments where he can maintain his independence.
