🛤️ Knoxville just made a national trail-town list (plus why we're not surprised...)
We have a lion cub is thriving at the zoo, the Smokies through the nights, and a gem of a new restaurant on the South Waterfront.

Spring in Knoxville feels earned in a way it doesn't in most places. You spend March watching the dogwoods start to make their move, checking the World's Fair Park calendar, and then one week in early April everything locks into place and you remember… right, this is why we live here.

This week happens to be one of those weeks. The Smokies are home every night, the music calendar is absurd in the best possible way, and the news out of the city makes you put your phone down and feel something. Grab a coffee, get comfortable, and let's get into it.

🦁 Zoo Knoxville Has a Lion Cub Finding His Roar

The Gist: Zoo Knoxville announced April 2 that a male African lion cub was born on February 17 to first-time mother Zahra and father Maji. Of the two cubs born in the litter, only one survived. After keepers noticed the surviving cub wasn't thriving under Zahra's care around the two-week mark, they made the call to begin hand-rearing him around the clock. He has since shown steady improvement, gaining weight and strength, and, per the zoo's announcement, finding his "little roar."
Why It Matters: The cub's birth is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan, a cooperative breeding program designed to maintain genetic diversity in African lion populations across accredited zoos. Knoxville's zoo is doing serious conservation work, and this little guy is a living piece of that mission. It's also just a very good news story.
🚵 Knoxville Just Made a National Mountain Biking List

The Gist: The International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) announced March 31 its inaugural class of 28 IMBA Trail Towns across the country, and Knoxville made the cut. The designation recognizes communities with strong trail infrastructure, a commitment to trail funding, an active local trail organization, meaningful community engagement, and a sustainable stewardship plan. IMBA's listing specifically notes Knoxville's 98-mile network and its model partnerships between the local biking organization and city government.
Why It Matters: Landing on this list alongside destinations like Flagstaff, Breckenridge, and Santa Fe puts Knoxville in real company and validates the years of work local trail advocates have put in to build and maintain what's become a world-class riding destination inside city limits.

🛶 Riverside bites and off-menu cobbler shakes

610 Waterfront Dr, Knoxville, TN
Earl’s has settled into the South Knoxville waterfront with ease that only comes when the locals build it themselves. Perched next to Suttree Landing Park, the space is a masterclass in intentional design: think river-inspired murals and a dog-friendly patio built for lingering.
The move here is a pickle-brined chicken tender platter or a crisp Chicken Cobb salad enjoyed outside. For those in the know, ask for the off-menu blueberry cobbler shake; it’s the seasonal secret currently causing table envy.
Between the Xül drafts and the Vienna Coffee pours, it’s the neighborhood anchor the riverfront deserves.

🐾 Milo is a bright 2-year-old mixed breed weighing 56 pounds.
Currently thriving in foster care through the Young-Williams Animal Center, this clever fellow has mastered everything from housebreaking to a reliable "sit." He plays hard with other dogs and would do well with a sturdy companion, though he is still learning to trust strangers.
With a modest adoption fee of $50, Milo is a loyal, food-motivated learner ready for a dedicated local family to call his own.
