๐ The official start of summer is finally here
How to skip the Bananas traffic, what's coming to the South Waterfront, plus the long-weekend lineup you'll actually use.

The city feels officially switched into summer mode this week.

Downtown is busy before sunset, the Tennessee River is packed with kayaks again, and every local calendar somehow includes live music, baseball, and BBQ at the same time. We even included a few traffic survival tips for Banana Ball weekend because, realistically, youโre going to need them.
Pour something cold and settle in. Thereโs a lot happening around town.

๐ Skip the Bananas traffic: KAT has you covered

The Gist: Knoxville Area Transit is running special shuttles for both Savannah Bananas games this week. For the May 21 game at Covenant Health Park, the free Downtown Connector starts gameday pickups at Summer Place next to the Langley Garage at 3 pm, running every 15 minutes. For the much bigger May 23 game at Neyland Stadium, KAT buses start at 1 pm from two locations: Civic Coliseum and Auditorium Garage B, and Market Square at Krutch Park.
Why It Matters: Neyland Stadium parking on a Banana Ball night is going to be a scene. The Civic Coliseum option is $25 for parking plus the round-trip ride, and the Market Square option is a $10 round-trip "Football Shuttle Pass" purchased through the KAT app. If you have tickets, this is the easier way in and out.
๐ Developing one of Knoxville's last big riverfront sites
The Gist: Knoxville's Community Development Corporation, in partnership with the City of Knoxville, has launched a formal Request for Qualifications to redevelop roughly 15 acres along the South Knoxville waterfront, directly across the river from UT and right next to the planned pedestrian bridge. The site spans six parcels along West Blount Avenue and Scottish Pike, with about 1,400 feet of riverfront. The vision, shaped by three years of community input through the South Waterfront Advisory and Advocacy Group, is for a walkable mixed-use development with green space, river access, and stronger connections between South Knoxville neighborhoods, downtown, and the Tennessee River.
Why It Matters: This is one of the most consequential pieces of land left on Knoxville's waterfront. The "Down River" master plan that guides it was approved by City Council earlier in 2026, and the project ties directly into the Vestal and Old Sevier neighborhoods that have been rapidly reshaping South Knoxville. Worth paying attention to as proposals come in.

๐ An iconic smokehouse for big appetites

3029 Tazewell Pike, Knoxville, TN
Sweet Pโs Uptown Corner is practically built for long weekends. Pitmaster Chris Ford has been smoking low and slow since 2005, famously stumping Man v. Food with the Gigante Burrito, a stack of chopped pork, mac and cheese, and banana pudding.
Skip the usual crazy 640 traffic, grab a plate of dry-rubbed ribs or slow-smoked brisket, and settle in with live blues and a cold drink. If you're hosting a graduation backyard party, their catering team has you covered!

900 Volunteer Landing Ln, Knoxville, TN
Knoxville Adventure Collective eliminates the hassle of hauling gear! Pushing off from the private downtown dock, you can glide under the historic bridges or catch a downstream shuttle for a quiet afternoon spotting river otters.
To celebrate the start of summer, a free dry bag is included with every kayak rental. It is a perfect introduction to the season, also featured in the premier edition of the new Knoxville Field Guide.
Spots are available for evening and morning SUP yoga classes launching on the water through August, alongside a final pre-fall dam lock-through on May 24.
