Happy Fourth of July weekend, Knoxville!

Summer is fully here, and the city has that familiar holiday rhythm. Families gathering, downtown filling up, grills firing up, and everyone making plans around a good fireworks view.

This week we have the details you need before heading out, plus a few local gems worth adding to your list, from a longtime Fountain City favorite to the Knoxville team helping shape fields around the world.

Hope you get outside, enjoy the sunshine, and find a little time to celebrate with the people who make this place feel like home.

💥 Holiday bridge closures for the Fourth

The Gist: If you were planning to watch Knoxville's fireworks from the Gay Street Bridge, you will need to find a new spot. The big display will launch from the Henley Street Bridge at 9:45 p.m., which means major road closures will start as early as 2 p.m. around World’s Fair Park.

Why It Matters: While we can't crowd the bridge like the old days, the festival at World’s Fair Park is free and marks America's landmark 250th birthday. It is a great time to get together with neighbors, as long as we all plan our driving routes ahead of time.

What's Next:

  • 2 p.m. – 11 p.m.: Closures begin on World's Fair Park Drive and Clinch Avenue.

  • 4 p.m. – Midnight: Henley Street and Henley Street Bridge close completely.

  • 9:15 p.m.: Gay Street Bridge closes to all walkers and cyclists, reopening right after the show.

🌱 The grass the world is watching? Grown here.

The Gist: Here is a good one for the cookout. A University of Tennessee turfgrass team, led by Distinguished Professor John Sorochan, partnered with Michigan State to design and test the natural playing surfaces for all 16 World Cup host stadiums and dozens of training fields across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Why It Matters: Their research shapes how the ball rolls, how players plant their feet, and how the turf survives months of use, including inside domed stadiums. Every time you catch a match this month, that is a little bit of Knoxville underfoot.

🍔 A legendary Fountain City burger tradition

2803 Essary Dr, Knoxville

Litton’s Market & Restaurant has been feeding the neighborhood since 1946, and the family-owned classic still packs the dining room. The team is currently away on their annual summer vacation, reopening just after the holiday on Tuesday, July 7th.

Settle into a booth for their famous hand-formed burgers on house-made buns, or opt for a comforting plate lunch. Just remember to celebrate a little by saving room for the bakery case: a slice of their strawberry cake or chocolate chess pie is the ultimate summer treat.

🕵️‍♂️ Spotting red, white, and local pride

435 Union Ave, Knoxville

Just steps from Market Square, you’ll get to Nothing Too Fancy, the spot to grab a Waldo passport before browsing rows of famously soft, hand-printed tees. They have plenty of red, white, and blue gear, including the official commemorative shirt for the city's Festival on the 4th at World's Fair Park.

Need custom ice trays or retro cropped tees to enjoy summer like a true Knoxvillian?
