Father’s Day weekend is here, and Knoxville has plenty of ways to celebrate. Whether your plans involve baseball, brunch, a cold drink, or just spending time together, there is no shortage of options.

We also have some meaningful community moments happening this week, including Juneteenth celebrations and a new exhibit sharing important local history. A good weekend has a little fun and a little reflection, and this one brings both.

🦏 Zoo Knoxville's lease gets renewed for five more years

The Gist: City Council this week renewed the lease for Zoo Knoxville at 3500 Knoxville Zoo Drive for another five years, recommended by the Urban Design and Development Department. Council also approved $75,000 in Historic Preservation and Façade Improvement Program funds for the restoration of the old building at 825 North Central Street, which sits between two already-restored properties on the block. The funding goes to Paragon Development for the building's rehabilitation.

Why It Matters: Zoo Knoxville is one of the city's most visited attractions, with the lease renewal locking in stability through 2031. The 825 N. Central restoration is part of a longer arc of work bringing the corridor between downtown and Happy Holler back to life one building at a time.

🏛️ Beck Cultural Exchange Center debuts Juneteenth exhibit

The Gist: The Beck Cultural Exchange Center is launching a new exhibit this week focused on the lives of enslaved people in East Tennessee. The exhibit highlights individuals enslaved near the present-day Mabry-Hazen House and explores their contributions, daily lives, and experiences in 19th-century Knoxville. The center's president, Rev. Renee Kesler, says understanding this history matters for the city's future.

Why It Matters: Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in America. Beck has anchored this work in Knoxville for fifty years. The exhibit will be on view starting this week. The Juneteenth Celebration at Dr. Walter Hardy Park on Friday will be the first chance for many to see it.

⚽️ Big screens, cold beers, and ultimate dad vibes

9045 Kingston Pike, Knoxville

Carolina Ale House is the destination for catching the summer's biggest soccer matches alongside a lively crew of local servers who keep the pace quick. Sometimes the best weekend plan is the simplest one: settling into a booth where the energy is high, the draft list is long, and the screens are massive.

It is the perfect casual spot to toast the season, especially with their Father’s Day special on deck. Pair a frosty pint with their crispy bacon cheese fries, or step things up with the flavor-packed Cajun Chicken Bowl.

🎳 Vintage basement lanes Pops might want to visit

414 S Gay St, Knoxville

Maple Hall is hitting a major milestone of its own by celebrating ten wonderful years of community and hospitality. Their upcoming "Bowliversary" on Tuesday, June 23rd, features a full hour of free bowling and complimentary shoe rentals.

Gathering for milestones feels right in this historic Gay Street basement space, a favorite local haunt built right where East Tennessee’s very first baseball field once stood. Treat Dad to an afternoon of frame-by-frame competition paired with a classic Moscow Mule makes for a smooth, nostalgic Father's Day gesture, too.
